My Top Ten Dance Movies

Well as it’s holiday season.  Time to catch up on some relaxation and some restful movie watching! The perfect time to revisit some of my guilty pleasures. Dance Movies!  These movies leave me inspired and smiling ear to ear!  I feel compelled to share my favorites…

Sonya’s Top Ten Dance Movies Every Dancer MUST Watch:

Yes, every dancer needs to know why “nobody puts baby in the corner” and why Patrick Swayze is so inspirational and amazing.  A must see!  This one is non-negotiable. Patrick Swayze was raised in a dance studio as his mother was a studio owner.  He was a star football player in high school and in his 20’s he studied at the Harkness Ballet and Joffrey Ballet schools.  He is the real deal friends… no body doubles needed for Patrick!

Sarah Jessica Parker
and Helen Hunt really want to get on Dance TV!  Enough said.  I love the opening scene when she tells her class she, “loves to dance” and the classic eighties dance scenes.  A true classic!

3. FAME  (The Original)
Doesn’t even need an explanation, but here is my favorite quote, “Success is waking up in the morning so excited about what you have to do that you literally fly out the door. Its getting to work with people you love. Success is connecting  with the world and making people feel.  Its finding a way to bind together people who have nothing in common but a dream.  Its falling asleep at night knowing that you did the best job you could.  Success is joy and freedom and friendship… and success is love!”

Following your dreams regardless of the obstacles. Inspirational for so many reasons. I often re-watch the last scene. It sends chills up my spine every single time.

Gene Kelly is amazing and you’ll be smiling and singing in no time! Too many fantastic scenes to recount.

Kids are priceless and this fantastic documentary that leaves me inspired every time I watch it!

Great dancing, fabulous New York sights and extra cheesy acting! I enjoy some of the more realistic scenes about the hard physical realities of Ballet, its pressures and the intensity of its training.  I love that when she auditions the judges say “Who cares, just look at her.” Eva is my favorite by far and I love the scene when her teacher reminds her to re-visit the ballet barre when life gets hard.

Jessica Alba’s acting could use a little help, but I love that she is fighting for what she loves and does it with integrity! Missy Elliot rocks too!

9. FOOTLOOSE  (The Original)
Fighting for the right to dance in a town that prohibits it…  Love it!

A beautiful teacher is determined to change the lives of young students with dance.  Antonio Banderas is wonderful and I love the fusion of Hip Hop and Ballroom Dance.

This one is a special favorite but isn’t on the above list due to its “adult” nature.  It is my favorite…

Can’t believe that this movie came out in 1983! This is an inspirational classic.  Not for younger dancers, due to the nature of her “night job”.  I like to play the game,  “Is that a body double? or Jennifer Beals?” Apparently famous breakdance legend,  Crazy Legs is her body double for all the breakdancing moves!  Which makes the game all the more fun.

“There’s just something about dance, … It’s like a primal thing in all of us.”
Quote by Patrick Swayze.

Wishing everyone Happy Happy Holidays!
